Videoconference by Jean-François Joanny on 1 April 2021
New event organized by Les Amis de l’IHES on Thursday 1 April 2021, 6:30 pm (French Time)
Jean-François JOANNY (Collège de France) gave a Zoom conference entitled:
“Active matter and the physics of life”
“Active matter” is a form of matter that is not in thermodynamic equilibrium and in which at the local scale each constituent consumes energy. Biological systems at all scales are examples of such active systems. It has been recently discovered that they have common “universal” properties. I will show on several examples how the hydrodynamic theory of active matter, based on very general arguments, provides a good description of cells and tissues.”
