Travelling by Plane:
The nearest airport to Les-Houches is GENEVA

There are direct buses to Les-Houches from Geneve airport. (Note that Switzerland is NOT in Europe, and therefore a Swiss visa is needed for many nationalities (even if you take a bus from the French side of Geneva's airport, they check the visa at the border!) It is much better to take the bus on the International (Swiss) side than on the French side. There are more buses, your luggage goes first to the Swiss side, and the bus leaves a little later from the Swiss side (it has to make an interesting meander through, then under the airport, to go from the French to the Swiss side).

The timetable is: (click here for fully detailled informations)

When you arrive, the Bus ticket counter is straight ahead on the International side. (On the french side, just right before the bridge exit). They will tell you where the bus is.

For those who need, but have no Swiss visa, you can go to Bellegarde-sur-Valserine. There is not public transport! You can ask somebody to pick you up, or take a taxi (that we can not pay for!) There is a train from Bellegarde to St-Gervais it takes about 4 hours. Be sure that we know at advance about your arrival time, since there could be no more trains to Les-Houches at this day!

The other international Airport you may use is Lyon-Satolas (LYONS). You should take a bus to Lyon railway station (Lyon-Part-Dieu). It takes about 4 hours.

It is possible to use a private Limousine service http://www.a-t-s.net/. The Limousine can be booked 3 days in advance or just the previous day. Sundays are busy days, and there will be little available places. You should book the limousine yourself using their web page and ask for a shared transfer, you will be ask your credit card number and your flight reference. Select for destination at step 1 Chamonix Valley but when the ask for the address of you hotel put the adress of the physics center
Ecole de Physique des Houches Cote des Chavants F-74310 Les Houches FRANCE
The Limousine will fetch you at the Airport and drive you to the school. The price is the same as the travel by bus plus taxi to the school.
Travelling by Train:
There is a night train from Paris leaving from Gare d'Austerlitz at 22:32 arriving at Les Houches at 9:05 with a change at St-Gervais-les-Bains-le-Fayet
Austerlitz -- Les Houches

For all trains and some regular buses timetable, please consult: In both cases use for departure city Geneve and arrival city Les Houches.

From Geneve airport you two options (see the CFF site) but the quicker by one hour is to go a city bus till Gare des Eaux-Vives (take the trolley-bus 10 from the Airport until the Bel-Air--the stop on the bridge over the Rhone-- and change to the trolley-bus 16), then train to Annemasse - (La Roche s/Foron) - (St-Gervais-Les-Bains) - Les Houches. Train very pleasant, quite a few, but slow. The other possibility (more expensive) is city bus (or taxi) to Geneva Cornavin, then train on the Swiss side: GVA-Lausanne-Martigny-Chamonix-Les Houches. Extraordinary line from Martigny, well worth taking during day-time.

These two options are given by the Swiss train web site http://www.cff.ch/pv/index_f.htm entrering for departure city Geneve and arrival city Les Houches. Geneva bus informations are availaible from the site http://www.tpg.ch
