Les Amis de l’IHES

Les Amis de l’IHES helps to promote the cutting edge research carried out at IHES as widely as possible. They organise conferences aimed at a broad audience, to introduce current research projects and organise cultural events of a scientific nature.

Les Amis de l’IHES is an association which was created on 8 October 1998 to coincide with the Institute’s 40th anniversary celebrations. Louis Michel was Chairman until he passed away on 30 December 1999; he was succeeded by Marcel Berger, former IHES Director, and by Jean-Marc Deshouillers, professor at the University Victor Segalen Bordeaux 2. Since May 2009, the association has been chaired by Valentin Poénaru who was professor at the Paris-Sud University (Orsay) before retiring.

Prochaine conférence des Amis de l'IHES

The association “Les Amis de l’IHES” will organise a conference on Thursday 7 November 2019 at 5pm, in the Marilyn and James Simons Conference Centre.

Thibault DAMOUR (IHES) will give a talk (in French) entitled:

“Enigmatic Black Holes”

We shall review the latest developments on Black Holes: the story of their discovery as strange conceptual objects within Einstein’s theory; their definition and properties; the slow recognition of their necessary physical and astrophysical reality; the various astrophysical observations that have confirmed their existence and verified some of their properties. Finally, we shall discuss the enigmas that black holes still pose today, especially when considering their quantum properties.

The conference will be followed by a musical interlude by Louis Abraham (piano) who will play works by J.-S. Bach, S. Prokofiev and F. Chopin.
