Dennis Gaitsgory awarded the Breakthrough Prize in Mathematics
IHES warmly congratulates Dennis Gaitsgory for being awarded the prestigious Breakthrough Prize in Mathematics for his role in proving the geometric Langlands conjecture – a landmark achievement in one of the most ambitious and far-reaching programs in modern mathematics. Dennis Gaitsgory is Director of the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics, and holder of the Israel Gelfand Chair of Mathematics at IHES. Along with Barbara Burk, he also represents the Max Planck Society in the IHES Board of Directors, of which the Society is a founding member.
Last summer, Dennis Gaitsgory shared insights into aspects of the geometric Langlands correspondence for an article published for the latest issue of the Bois-Marie Newsletter. Read more here.
Having dedicated over thirty years to this problem, Dennis Gaitsgory outlined a strategy for a full proof in 2013. Following more than a decade of intensive work with several colleagues and students, the proof was published in 2024, spanning over 800 pages of work across five papers – an extraordinary accomplishment.
IHES also wishes to thank the Squarepoint Foundation for generously supporting the Institute’s Israel Gelfand Chair.
