Thibault Damour Receives Two Prestigious Distinctions in July 2025

IHES is pleased to announce that Thibault Damour, Emeritus Professor at the Institute, has received two major distinctions in July 2025: the 2025 Frontiers of Science Award and the title of ISGRG Fellow 2025.

  • On 13 July 2025, during the opening of the International Congress of Basic Science held in Beijing, China, Thibault Damour was awarded—together with his co-authors—one of the 2025 Frontiers of Science Awards for the article “Strong-Field Gravity Tests with the Double Pulsar.”

This award recognizes recent scientific publications that mark a major breakthrough in their field. Thibault Damour is particularly honored by this recognition, as the article represents the latest development in testing strong-field gravity with binary pulsars—a research direction he initiated in his earlier work.

Those wishing to explore this dynamic research area may watch the Balzan Lectures titled “50 Years of Binary Pulsars”, delivered at the Institute in September 2024 by Thibault Damour and Michael Kramer, with an introduction by Physics Nobel laureate Joseph H. Taylor.

  • On 17 July 2025, during the GR24 Conference in Glasgow, Scotland, Thibault Damour was officially named a Fellow of the International Society on General Relativity and Gravitation (ISGRG).

This second distinction highlights his outstanding achievements and seminal contributions to multiple areas of general relativity and gravitation, including scalar-tensor theories and, notably, the two-body problem.

IHES extends its warmest congratulations to Thibault Damour on these well-deserved honors.
