Women, Science, and Imagination: Exceptional Evening on April 2 at IHES

April 2, 2026 – 6:00 p.m.
At the Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques, in Bures-sur-Yvette

How can we inspire young girls to pursue careers in science? What if part of the answer lies in novels, speculative fiction, and imagined worlds?

On April 2, IHES invites you to an exceptional evening dedicated to the power of imagination and literature in fostering scientific vocations among young women. At a time when the place of women in science remains a major issue, this roundtable will offer a fresh perspective: transforming representations in order to broaden the field of possibilities.

Stories shape our ambitions. Scientific figures in fiction, tales of exploration, and the worlds of science fiction and fantasy can open up unexpected horizons and spark lasting passions.

Moderated by science journalist Sylvain Allemand, a specialist in scientific and societal issues, the discussion will bring together speakers with complementary perspectives:

  • Élise Colin, Research Director at ONERA, author of Échos d’en Haut;

  • Roland Lehoucq, astrophysicist at the CEA and science communicator;

  • Sylvie Poulain, science fiction author;

In closing, Sylvie Retailleau, President of Universcience, Professor of Physics at Université Paris-Saclay, former President of Université Paris-Saclay and former French Minister for Higher Education and Research, will share her perspective on the institutional and societal challenges related to the place of women in science.

Following the discussion, the evening will continue with a cocktail reception accompanied by a book sale and signing session, offering a special opportunity to engage with the speakers in a convivial atmosphere.
