Schlumberger Chair for Mathematical Sciences

Jesse Thaler, a theoretical physicist at MIT and holder of the Schlumberger Chair at IHES, works at the intersection of quantum field theory and artificial intelligence, developing new approaches to uncover the mysteries of fundamental physics.

Jesse Thaler is a theoretical particle physicist who fuses techniques from quantum field theory and machine learning to address outstanding questions in fundamental physics. Much of his research is aimed at maximizing the discovery potential of the Large Hadron Collider through new theoretical frameworks and novel data analysis techniques.

As Schlumberger Chair at IHES, Thaler is exploring the use of artificial intelligence to understand more formal aspects of theoretical physics, including constraints on two-dimensional conformal field theories and the analytic structure of scattering amplitudes.

Thaler received his Ph.D. in Physics from Harvard University in 2006, after which he was a fellow at the Miller Institute for Basic Research in Science at the University of California, Berkeley.  He joined the MIT Physics Department in 2010, where he is a professor and member of the MIT Center for Theoretical Physics – a Leinweber Institute. In 2020, Thaler became the inaugural director of the NSF Institute for Artificial Intelligence and Fundamental Interactions.
