Yu Deng

Schlumberger Chair for Mathematical Sciences

Mathematician Yu Deng studies how microscopic interactions between particles give rise to the macroscopic laws governing gases, fluids, and waves, research that earned him the 2026 Fields Medal.

Yu Deng is a professor of mathematics at the University of Chicago. He is interested in partial differential equations and probability, in connections with questions in mathematical physics, including statistical physics, kinetic theory and quantum field theory.

Yu Deng obtained his Ph.D. in 2015 under the supervision of Alexandru Ionescu. He was then a Courant Instructor at New York University and assistant professor at University of Southern California before moving to Chicago.

Recently, Yu Deng has been working on derivation of kinetic equations from particle and wave systems, and the analysis of stochastic partial differential equations in critical dimension.

In 2026, Yu Deng was awarded the Fields Medal at the International Congress of Mathematicians, hosted in July at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia.
