“Aspects of Geometric Group Theory”: the IHES Summer School 2019!

The new edition of the IHES Summer School is organized by Emmanuel Breuillard (University of Cambridge), Richard Canary (University of Michigan), Indira Chatterji (Université Nice-Sophia-Antipolis) et Fanny Kassel (CNRS and IHES). It will be held from 8 to 19 July 2019 at the IHES and will focus on aspects of geometric group theory.

As a distinct area, geometric group theory is relatively new (in the early 1990s). It is devoted to the study of discrete groups by exploring connections between algebraic properties of such groups and geometric properties of spaces on which these groups act. Nowadays, geometric group theory is a very active and competitive area of research and is the subject of many conferences and special programs in recent years (such as an IHP program in 2014, a MSRI program in 2016 or the Newton Institute in 2017).

Geometric groups theory is a very broad area, and this edition of the Summer School will mainly focus on geometric aspects. It will therefore teach, to graduate students across mathematical fields, the important trends in geometric group theory so that they can use geometric group theory methods in their respective fields.

For two weeks, international experts on the topic will give mini-courses :
Yves BENOIST (CNRS and Université Paris-Sud), Kai-Uwe BUX (Universität Bielefeld), Ruth CHARNEY (Brandeis University), François DAHMANI (Université Grenoble Alpes), Anna ERSCHLER (CNRS and ENS), François GUÉRITAUD (CNRS and Université de Lille), Kathryn MANN (Brown University), Yair MINSKY (Yale University), Karen VOGTMANN (University of Warwick), Genevieve WALSH (Tufts University), Anna WIENHARD (Universität Heidelberg) and Daniel T. WISE (McGill University).

The Summer School is open to everybody, but intended primarily for young participants, including PhD students and postdoctoral fellows. Applications for IHES Summer School are closed, more information on the Summer School webpage.
