Alexzandria Figueroa & Robert Penner Chair

Mathematician Antoine Song explores deep connections between geometry, probability, analysis, and random matrices, while investigating what makes mathematical problems both challenging and fascinating.

Antoine Song is currently a professor of mathematics at the California Institute of Technology. Before that, he studied at the École Normale Supérieure (ENS) in Paris, then earned his PhD at Princeton in 2019 under the supervision of Fernando Codá Marques, before moving even farther west for a postdoctoral position at Berkeley.

He enjoys thinking about geometry, particularly differential, analytic, metric, and convex geometry. He is interested in questions that connect geometry with other areas of mathematics, such as analysis, probability, and group theory. Recently, he found a connection between the shape of minimal surfaces and random matrices. He also connected a question concerning high-dimensional random vectors to Talagrand’s convexity conjecture, which led to its resolution. He maintains a list of his own open questions and reflects on what makes a problem interesting and difficult for humans or machines.
