Each year, after examination of their applications, about 200 mathematicians and theoretical physicists from all over the world are selected by the scientific council and invited to come to IHES to pursue their research project, collaborate with other researchers from the community and participate in the Institute’s activities.
This selection is made twice a year on the sole criterion of excellence and by close collaboration with the CNRS-IHES Research Directors and the holder of the Université de Cergy-Pontoise-IHES chair.
All applications are examined in June and December by the scientific council except post-doctoral applications which are examined only in December and the summer school proposals which are examined only in June.
Non-discrimination policy: IHES policy is that no person shall be discriminated against on account of race, religion, color, disability, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, national or ethnical origin.
CNRS Delegation at IHES
Delegation is a specific position offered to lecturers and university professors working in research at CNRS.
Delegation is a specific position offered to lecturers and university professors working in research at CNRS.
For 2025-2026, IHES, in partnership with INSMI and INP, is offering three 6-month delegations, two in in mathematics and one in physics.
Teacher-researchers are invited to submit their applications for CNRS delegations via the Galaxie application (the application deadline: Autumn 2024 tbc). You are also invited to contact an IHES researcher or to write to Emmanuel Ullmo, ullmo@ihes.fr, to express your interest in a research stay at IHES. Delegation can begin on September 1, 2025 or February 1, 2026. Selected applicants will be offered accommodation at the Institute’s residence, some being suitable for a family. Help with childcare is also available.
Delegations to CNRS are subject to an agreement between CNRS and the teacher-researcher’s home institution. Financial compensation is paid by CNRS to the home institution for the replacement of the teacher-researcher’s teaching duties. IHES will reimburse CNRS for the cost of delegations.

All applications should be submitted on line and include the following documents:
– Application form duly completed
– Curriculum-vitæ
– Publication list
– Short research project
– Recommendation letters (not required for Senior researchers)
Welcoming researchers from African countries
Thanks to the support of the Simons Foundation, IHES funds the traveling and the visiting costs of researchers coming from Africa and selected by the Scientific Council.

Summer school call for proposals
Since 2006, IHES has been hosting summer schools in mathematics or theoretical physics (on alternating years). These schools provide a hundred or so PhD students, postdocs and young researchers an overview of the latest developments.
The IHES summer schools are typically organized by an external scientific organizing committee, with IHES providing administrative and financial support (i.e. most of the accommodation costs at the university dorms located nearby for participants, as well as travel and accommodation expenses for lecturers and organizers).
For the 2028 edition of its summer school in theoretical physics that will take place in July, IHES is inviting Letters of interest.
The Letter of Interest (approximately one page) should contain, at a minimum, a brief description of the proposed subject and the organizing committee. Additional details concerning the list of proposed speakers and of any extra funding the organizers may bring along are appreciated.
For full consideration, the Letter of Interest should reach us by May 1, 2026.
Successful groups will be invited to submit a more complete proposal (5 pages or so, with a more detailed list of speakers and a program) by June 12, 2026, for review and selection by the IHES Scientific Council.

Postdocs
The IHES Scientific Council selects a number of applicants for postdoctoral research visits in mathematics, theoretical physics and theoretical biology at its December meeting each year. Selected postdocs will be invited for two years, with a possible extension of one year, starting from the following academic year.
Selected applicants will be welcomed to IHES as members of the Postdoctoral Institute.
These positions are funded thanks to IHES’ partnership with outside institutions or because they are part of a specific project (HUAWEI, SIMONS Foundation, ERC grant…).
All applications must be completed online and include the following:
– duly completed application form
– curriculum-vitae
– list of publications
– research summary
– 2 to 3 letters of recommendation
Postdoctoral positions funded by specific programmes
The Huawei Young Talents Program
