Greater Paris postdocs in mathematics Welcome Day

Special event for all math post-doc from Paris Region on Tuesday October 21, 2025, at IHES

This year, the Special event for all math post-doc from Paris Region will take place on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, at IHES, in the Marilyn and James Simons Conference center.

Organized jointly with the FMJH and the FSMP, the goal of this welcome day is to provide young mathematicians with an opportunity to meet their colleagues, help newcomers find out more about the mathematical environment in the Paris region, including possible funding opportunities for future research projects, and give an overview of the French (academic) job market.

To attend this special day, go to the FMJH website to register.

IHES is inviting applications for invited reseachers and postdocs

IHES applications on the general invitation program and for postdoctoral positions are now open.

The general invitation program

Each year, around 200 researchers are invited to come and work at IHES with their peers and participate in the Institute’s activities. As part of the general invitation program, these researchers apply for a duration subject to the scientific council‘s approval.

During their visit, visiting researchers receive a per diem, a workspace, and free accommodation in the IHES residence. They also have access to the cafeteria for lunch during the week.

Applications are examined twice a year (in June and December) by the IHES Scientific Council and selected on the sole criterion of excellence.

Deadline for application: November 30th, 2025

Postdoctoral research visits

In order to give young researchers the place they deserve, IHES has recently expanded its postdoctoral offer by opening several 2 or 3-year positions.

Postdoctoral candidates have the possibility to apply for specific projects. These projects can be financed by programs such as the Huawei Young Talents Program, the Simons Foundation grants, or the ERC grants.

Middle school students at IHES

Cédric Villani, IHES-University of Lyon Chair in Analysis since September 2022, wanted to set up a program that would give children, who are not familiar with the profession, access to research from an early age in order to awaken their minds and perhaps inspire them to take it up.

Cédric Villani, IHES-University of Lyon Chair in Analysis since September 2022, wanted to set up a program that would give children, who are not familiar with the profession, access to research from an early age in order to awaken their minds and perhaps inspire them to take it up.

Thus, 41 students from the 7th grade of the Aimé Césaire middle school in Les Ulis, accompanied by four teachers, came to IHES on Monday, March 27 to discover the profession of researcher.

After visiting the Institute in small groups, they gathered in the amphitheater of the Marilyn and James Simons Conference Center. Cédric Villani first presented his career and research and then gave the floor to the post-doctoral students, all mathematicians, who gave a short presentation: Veronica Fantini on proof in mathematics, Edmund Heng on fractions and Mirek Olšák on computer science. Student participation was strong and there were many questions.

The afternoon ended with a snack during which the students were able to exchange with the speakers in an informal manner.

This first session for middle school students was very much appreciated by all participants, students and speakers alike.

The second session took place on June 1st with 29 students from a 7th grade class of the Mondétour middle school. The program remained on the same basis as the first session. This time, after Cédric Villani’s talk, Veronica Fantini gave a short presentation on units of measurement. Mirek Olšák explained how computers could solve problems, using as an example the problem of the rider’s game (in reference to the sculpture Skolem, Lump Bumps and Windy Figures). The students were delighted to learn about the scientific profession and the Bois-Marie estate.

Closing date for application to the IHES general visiting program and the IHES postdoctoral program

Researchers wishing to visit the Institute had until 3 December 2020 to apply!

Application to the IHES general visiting program

Every year, around 200 visiting professors come to IHES to profit from its exceptional working environment and the opportunity to collaborate with other researchers of the scientific community and to participate in the IHES activities. The IHES general visiting programme allows a group of selected candidates to visit the Institute during a limited period of time, proposed by the candidate and approved by the scientific council. Visiting professors at IHES are offered a per diem, an office, and free accommodation at the Ormaille residence. Lunch at the Institute’s cafeteria is also offered to them during the week.

The selection of candidates is made by the scientific council on the only criterion of excellence and in close collaboration with the CNRS-IHES director and associated professor, and the holder of the université de Cergy-Pontoise – IHES Chair in Analysis. Applications for the general visiting program are assessed twice a year by the Institute’s scientific council. The next selection will take place in December 2020.

Deadline for visiting applications: 3 December 2020

Application to the IHES postdoctoral visiting program

In recent years, the Institute has intensified its postdoctoral programs with the aim of giving more space and opportunities to young researchers. We offer two types of postdoctoral  stay:

    • Suitable candidates can join specific research projects funded by ERC grants supporting some of the Institute’s permanent members (Hugo Duminil-Copin, Fanny Kassel, Maxim Kontsevich, Vasily Pestun) or other programs such as the Huawei Young Talents Programme, the IBM program in Artificial Intelligence, or the joint program CARMIN with participation to one of the quarterly thematic programs of the Institut Henri Poincaré.
    • One or two-year positions are also offered to young researchers in mathematics and theoretical physics as part of the non-specific program.

Deadline for post-doctoral applications: 3 December 2020

The scientific council of IHES will meet in December 2020 to examine the applications received and to select the next visiting professor.

Postdocs

The IHES Scientific Council selects a number of applicants for postdoctoral research visits in mathematics, theoretical physics and theoretical biology at its December meeting each year. Selected postdocs will be invited for two years, with a possible extension of one year, starting from the following academic year.

Selected applicants will be welcomed to IHES as members of the Postdoctoral Institute.

These positions are funded thanks to IHES’ partnership with outside institutions or because they are part of a specific project (HUAWEI, SIMONS Foundation, ERC grant…).

All applications must be completed online and include the following:
– duly completed application form
– curriculum-vitae
– list of publications
– research summary
– 2 to 3 letters of recommendation
